A Changing Places Toilet is a large, accessible restroom equipped with additional space and specialised equipment designed to cater to the requirements of individuals with severe disabilities. In contrast to a typical accessible toilet, Changing Places facilities are equipped with amenities such as privacy curtains, lifting hoists, and adult-sized changing benches.

The toilet should at least 12 square metres to provide the space required for two carers and turning space for a wheelchair. Plus, often, an accompanying access ramp is needed.

The restroom should have a minimum area of 12 square meters, ensuring ample room for two caregivers and wheelchair manoeuvrability. Additionally, it frequently requires the installation of an accompanying access ramp to overcome a raised threshold height.

In the absence of these dedicated facilities, caregivers and family members are forced to assist individuals with disabilities on unsanitary restroom floors, which poses both hygiene and safety concerns.

New Public Buildings in England Must Have Changing Places Toilets

From 2021, the UK government made it compulsory for new public buildings in England to have at least one large accessible toilet for severely disabled people.

Examples of public buildings that must comply:

  • Shopping centres
  • Sports stadiums
  • Arts & music venues
  • Museums
  • Supermarkets
  • Cinemas
  • Motorway service stations

The news was “huge” for the “quarter of a million people in the UK who need Changing Places toilets. Having access to these much-needed facilities increases independence and improves quality of life”- Rob Burley, Director of Campaigns, Care and Support at Muscular Dystrophy UK.
